Shiitake Mushroom LogI attended a workshop at the Gold Coast Permaculture HQ on 1st October and purchased a Shiitake mushroom log.

Having no hot water cupboard, because the solar hot water storage is up on the roof, the best way to give them their ideal warm humid dark conditions was to hang the log in the bathroom, wrapped in wet black cloth. In this case I used a black cotton tee shirt. This was then enclosed in plastic bags to keep the moisture in. I re-dampened the tee shirt after a few days by pouring a little water down from the top.

Within a week, on opening it up, it was clearly time for the first harvest. Our unseasonably cool weather this week (temperatures from about 18C at night to 22C during the day) has not proven to be a problem.
